Wind River Reservation Barrel Burning Tips

Wind River Agency, WY – Humans are the primary cause of wildfires on the Wind River Reservation with barrel burning being a major cause of human ignited fires.  Since July 1, twenty-two wildfires have occurred on the reservation, many of them started by escaped barrel fires.  On Monday, July 26, the largest fire to date burned 24 acres and threatened five residences before being suppressed.

Burning trash or barrel burning is allowed on the Wind River Reservation.   It is prohibited only when severe fire conditions warrant a ban.  No permit is required for barrel burning.

Residents can protect their families, neighbors, and homes by taking the following steps to burn trash safely.

Tips for Burning Trash

-Place the barrel at least 30 feet from your home and other structures.

-Inspect the barrel for holes and replace if necessary.

-Clear all flammable material and vegetation within 10 feet of the barrel.

-Site the barrel on a gravel or mineral soil, 4 to 6 feet in diameter.

-Use a spark screen at all times.

-Never overfill the barrel.

-Never burn pressurized/aerosol cans.

-Avoid burning in hot or windy conditions.

-Never leave the fire unattended and make sure it is out before leaving it.

-Do not hesitate to call 911 if the fire escapes.

-Burning is an adult job- do not allow children to start or attend a fire. Keep them away from the barrel fire.
