Minnesota family expresses appreciation for sacrifices of searchers and their families

UPDATE: Search for missing aircraft at 3:00 P.M. M.S.T. (Lander, WY) – By late afternoon Sunday, there were no new developments in the search for a missing light plane from the Twin Cities area. The plane dropped off radar six days ago over a rugged area of northwest Wyoming’s Wind River Range. Officials at the Incident Command center at Lander’s Hunt Field Airport were awaiting the arrival of ground crews and a Civil Air Patrol flight for debriefing. “We’ve had people out on the ground and in the air all day, and now we’re waiting for them to come back,” said Operations Chief Jason Aanestad. “The CAP flight is attempting to reevaluate the integrity of the emergency locater transmissions coming from the nine-square mile search area,” he said. Fatal accident on Highway 26

(KINNEAR)  The Wyoming Highway patrol is investigating an accident that occurred near Kinnear last night. A black convertible passenger car was discovered off the highway with it’s lights on just before midnight last night.  It appears there was a fatality because the Fremont County Coroner was called to the scene.  There was no further information on the incident. … Read entire article »

Game Department encourages hunting of white-tails

SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) – The Wyoming Game and Fish Department wants more hunters to turn their sights to white-tailed deer around Buffalo and Sheridan.      The Department says there are still many licenses available for white-tail doe and fawns in those areas of north-central Wyoming. Some of the hunts extend into mid-December and hunters in some areas may take up to four does or fawns.      Joe Gilbert is Sheridan regional wildlife supervisor. He says the permits offer a great opportunity for hunters to help manage deer populations.      The department says most white-tailed deer hunting is on private land or intermingled public and private land. Defendant in home invasion killing claims threat

SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) – A Sheridan teenager accused of murder in the home invasion slaying of an elderly man last year told police he participated in the crime because he was threatened by a co-defendant.      Seventeen-year-old Dharminder Vir Sen stands accused of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 79-year-old Robert Ernest in his home last year.      The Sheridan Press reports that prosecutors on Thursday played a tape recording for the jury.      Sen told police the day of the shooting that he agreed to participate in robbing Ernst’s home. Okla. couple’s relatives seek $40 million

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – Relatives of an Oklahoma couple who were killed in New Mexico – allegedly by two escapees from the Arizona State Prison and an accomplice – are asking for $40 million in damages.      Relatives of Gary and Linda Haas of Tecumseh mailed notice of claim letters Wednesday to Arizona authorities. Arizona officials have 60 days to respond.      Escapees Tracy Province and John McCluskey and McCluskey’s fiancee and cousin, Casslyn Welch, are charged with capital murder and carjacking in the Haas’ Aug. 2 deaths. Authorities have said Welch helped McCluskey, Province and inmate Daniel Renwick escape on July 30.      Province was captured in Meeteetse, Wyo.      The letters blame the escapes on “slipshod security” at the prison and “a long series of egregious errors.”      Renwick is not implicated in the Haas’ deaths. … Read entire article »

Big money raised in Wyoming superintendent race

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – Democrat Mike Massie and Republican Cindy Hill have each raised more than $100,000 since the August primary in their race for the state’s top education job.      Hill reports raising over $119,000 over about the last two months, while Massie has collected over $104,000.      While Hill reports raising more money, her total includes $60,000 in loans. Massie reported no loans.      For the entire campaign, Hill has raised over $226,000 and Massie nearly $180,000.      Hill had to spend a good chunk of money to beat three others in the GOP primary. Massie was unopposed in the Democratic primary.      More than $127,000, or 56 percent, of Hill’s money came from loans or her immediate family, whereas, Massie reports just $1,300 in family contributions. … Read entire article »

Teton County schools examine shorter summer break

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) – A proposal is being floated in Teton County schools to adopt a calendar that would spread out the school year and shorten summer break.      The idea was discussed at a recent school board meeting.      Jessica Lindstrom is co-chairwoman of the parent-teacher organization at two elementary schools. She says a lot of parents are asking her about the proposal.      Lindstrom says she’s hearing from people both for and against the idea and most people seem opposed to it.      Hayden Leeds, a junior at Jackson Hole High School, tells the Jackson Hole News & Guide students have rallied around the idea.      Under the proposal, summer break would be shortened from 12 weeks to five weeks and students would get a three-week break after each nine-week block of school.      —      Information from: Jackson Hole News And Guide, http://www.jhnewsandguide.com … Read entire article »

State plans to test up to 3,000 cattle

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – The state is planning to test up to 3,000 cattle in northern Wyoming for brucellosis (brew-suh-LOW’-sis).      The testing began Wednesday after preliminary tests indicated the disease was found in three cows in a Park County herd.      State Veterinarian Jim Logan says Thursday the three cows were being offered for sale at a livestock market when they were found possibly to have brucellosis.      Additional lab work is being done to confirm the initial results.      Logan says the herd the cattle came from shares a large grazing allotment with up to nine other herds.      Brucellosis is a bacterial disease that can cause pregnant bison, cattle and elk to abort their fetuses. Wendt says Lummis shirks veterans on votes

     LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) – Democratic U.S. House candidate David Wendt says incumbent Republican Cynthia Lummis has shirked her duties when it comes to military veterans.      Wendt says Lummis did not cast votes on several measures that he said would have benefited the nation’s veterans.      All the measures passed the U.S. House with little or no opposition. Two dealt with veterans’ health care and another with cost-of-living compensation.      Lummis responded through a campaign spokeswoman that she missed the votes because of a delayed flight and that she’s a strong advocate for U.S. troops.      Meantime, Wendt says he won’t be purchasing any television ads in the waning days of the campaign. Federal campaign finance reports show Wendt has raised only about $59,000 for the campaign and had only about $2,300 left as of Oct. 13. … Read entire article »
