UW’s Willis back from injury that ended ’10 season
LARAMIE,Wyo.(AP) – If theUniversityofWyomingfootball program were to give away a comeback player of the year award, Mark Willis would be the leading candidate. The sophomore defensive end looks to be fully recovered from a season-ending injury midway through the 2010 campaign. In three scrimmages during fall camp, Willis recorded 12 tackles, including five for loss and three sacks. His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by third-year coach Dave Christensen, who tells the Wyoming Tribune Eagle that Willis is going to help the team this season. Wyoming free safety suspended after DUI arrest
CASPER,Wyo.(AP) -UniversityofWyomingstarting free safety Kenny Browder has been suspended indefinitely after he was charged with DUI and underage drinking over the weekend. Authorities say the 20-year-old junior was arrested inAlbany County early Sunday morning. TheCasperStar-Tribune (http://bit.ly/9EmNhl ) reports his arraignment has been scheduled for Sept. 12. Wyomingcoach Dave Christensen said in a statement Monday that players know they have standards to follow and when they don’t meet the standards there are consequences. He declined further comment. NW Wyoming watches for new wildfires
Firefighters in northwestWyomingremain on alert for new wildfires after thousands of lightning strikes hit the area over the weekend. More than 6,700 lightning strikes were recorded Friday through early Monday inGrand TetonNational Park, the adjoining Bridger-TetonNational Forestand surrounding area. At least three new wildfires were ignited in the park and four new fires in the forest, including a 20 acre fire nearChristinaLakeabove Lander. That fire was quickly put out for a hot shot crew by the end of the weekend. Blast at Wyo. oil production site kills 3 workers
LINE CREEK VALLEY,Wyo.(AP) – Federal and state authorities are investigating an explosion that killed three workers who had been laying a fuel line at aWyomingoil storage site. Samson Resources Co. spokesman Dennis Neill said the blast Monday near Glenrock in a remote region of easternWyomingsparked a 10-acre fire before it was brought under control. The fuel line where the blast victims had been working was intended to supply a heater treatment facility that separates oil from water as they’re pumped out of the ground. The workers were employed by a contractor that theTulsa, Okla.-based Samson had hired to bring an oil well back into production at the site. Wyoming man who died in Bear Lake Utah identified
RANDOLPH,Utah(AP) – Authorities are identifying a 36-year-old man fromEvanston,Wyo., who died after he tried to retrieve an untethered boat during an outing atBearLakeinUtah. TheRichCountysheriff’s office says Todd D. Smith was camping in the Rainbow Cove area south of the Utah-Idaho border when he went into the water Saturday night to catch a boat that was drifting away. Deputies say they got a 911 call around 10:45 p.m., about 20 minutes after the man went into the water. The man’s body was spotted around 8 a.m. Sunday. A dive team recovered it. KSL-TV inSalt Lake Cityreports this is the second drowning at BearLakein the past two months. A 12-year-old Boy Scout drowned there in July after a SCUBA diving accident. … Read entire article »

CWC Ceremony Wednesday moved
(RIVERTON) With high winds predicted tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon,CentralWyomingCollegehas moved its annual Convocation ceremony to the Robert A. Peck Arts Center Theatre. The 4 p.m. ceremony was scheduled to be held on the outdoor plaza of the Intertribal Education and Community Center. With strong winds forecasted for Wednesday afternoon, CWC officials have decided to move the location. The public is invited to the ceremony, which includes a keynote address by diversity champion Peter Vogel and the conferral of the Professor Emeritus distinction on retired math professor Carol Rardin. Pavillion residents invited to meet oil and gas reps

1,700 get Rawlins hospital bills by mistake
RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) – About 1,700 Rawlins-area households erroneously got hospital bills from a collection agency because of a mix-up. The Rawlins Daily Times reports (http://bit.ly/mZ7wnT ) that MemorialHospitalofCarbonCountysent a list of accounts to the collection agency about three weeks ago to ensure their records were in synch. Gary Brodarick, the hospital’s vice president of support services, says the collection agency mistakenly thought it was a list of accounts it was expected to pursue and began sending out statements last week. Former VP Cheney defends practice of waterboarding
WASHINGTON (AP) – Former Vice President Dick Cheney says there’s no contradiction in advocating harsh interrogation tactics against suspectedU.S.enemies and opposing those practices when used against American citizens. Cheney was asked about a hypothetical case in whichIranwould decide to use waterboarding on an American suspected of spying. Cheney replies, “I think we would object on the grounds that we have obligations to our citizens.” Cheney, who is promoting his new memoir “In My Time,” has been associated with waterboarding, considered by many to be torture. Asked on NBC’s “Today” show if he was embracing a double-standard, he said, “These are not American citizens.” In the interview that aired Tuesday morning, Cheney also conceded he’d been a lightning rod for criticism during the Bush administration. “I’m Darth Vader,” he said. … Read entire article »

UW: Partner definition was in works for years
LARAMIE,Wyo.(AP) – A University of Wyoming official says the school spent years working on a definition of “domestic partnership” before it began offering health insurance vouchers to employees who are in one. The Casper Star-Tribune reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/pMQNQ2 ) that administrators began work on the definition in the mid-2000s. Domestic partners of faculty and employees can apply for a $600-per-month voucher for an outside health insurance plan. The program started Aug. 15. Spokesman Jim Kearns says university administrators decided the school needed to recognize domestic partners to attract top-flight faculty and administrators. Employees must sign an affidavit stating they will notify the school if the relationship changes. Steve Kiggins, the university’s interim communications director, says the school uses the same process to police insurance benefits for employees’ spouses or children. … Read entire article »
