Martha Hansen, Gov. Mead’s grandmother, dies at 97
CHEYENNE,Wyo.(AP) – Martha Hansen, the widow of formerWyoming Sen. Clifford Hansen and grandmother of Gov. Matt Mead, has died. She was 97. Mead announced Hansen’s death, saying she died Thursday at the family ranch inJackson. Mead says Hansen’s quiet grace was a defining attribute. He says she was unfailingly kind and gracious. Clifford Hansen married the former Martha Close in the fall of 1934. The couple celebrated their 75th anniversary shortly before Clifford Hansen died in late 2009. Rep. Cynthia Lummis and Sen. Rodeo coach dies of injuries after bucked by horse
ONTARIO,Ore.(AP) – The coach of anOregoncommunity college rodeo program has died of the injuries he suffered when he was bucked off his horse. The Argus Observer reports (http://bit.ly/rcZZ3S ) Treasure ValleyCommunity Collegerodeo coach Sonny Hansen was injured when he was bucked from his horse earlier this week. He was flown to anIdahohospital, where he was put on life support until his family arrived. He died early Thursday morning. Community college spokeswoman Abby Lee says the 42-year-old Hansen did “a tremendous amount” for the college’s rodeo program, including organizing, running and scheduling events. UW defense building a front wall
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) – TheWyomingdefensive line is making progress. Cowboys coach Dave Christensen says the big guys in the trench have improved each game and are playing more physical. The group has been a big reason why the Cowboys are off to a 3-1 start heading into this week’s bye. UW’s defensive line has accounted for all 10 of the team’s sacks this season, 16 1/2 of the team’s 23 tackles for loss, and all three of the team’s blocked kicks. WHSAA sets football playoff dates
CASPER,Wyo.(AP) – The state high school football playoff dates are set and live webcasting of title games will be permitted this year. The Wyoming High School Activities Association board of directors announced the playoff schedule on Wednesday inCasper. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will take place on Fridays - Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. The state championship games will be held Nov. 11 and 12 at War Memorial Stadium inLaramie. The Class 2A and 3A games will be played Nov. 11, and the Class 1A 6-man and 11-man and Class 4A games on Nov. 12. The Casper Star-Tribune reports that media will be allowed to have live webcasts of the championship games. Last year, the WHSAA allowed webcasts on a delayed basis. … Read entire article »

Wyo. beet farmers get ready for annual harvest
RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) – Beet farmers are getting ready for the annual harvest. InFremontCounty, Monday marks the official beginning of the picking season. Farmers plan to work all day to take beets from the field and send them to plants where they can be processed. Jennings Farms plans to harvest nearly 600 tons of beets a day. Jenningssaid (tells KCWY-TV (http://bit.ly/qKE1zX ) that the work used to be done by hand but now the beets are picked mechanically. The tops are removed and then the beets are loaded on trucks. Wyoming has most proposed uranium projects in US
CASPER,Wyo.(AP) – More than half of the proposed uranium projects in theUnited Statesare inWyoming. The Casper Star-Tribune (http://bit.ly/pAO48L) reported Thursday that 18 of the 28 uranium applications being considered by theU.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission are forWyomingprojects. The projects are clustered in thePowderRiver Basin, the Gas Hills in centralWyomingat the Great Divide Basin in northeastern Wyoming. This summer, the commission approved the Nichols Ranch project in thePowderRiver Basin. 3 West Nile cases in Wyoming so far this year
RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) – TheWyomingDepartment of Health has confirmed three cases ofWest Nilevirus in the state so far this year. Health Department spokeswoman Kim Deti says the agency confirmed cases inFremont,AlbanyandGoshencounties. Deti said (tells the Riverton Ranger) that theFremontCountycase is the most serious this season because the symptoms included encephalitis. Riverton man dies on highway
(RIVERTON) A Riverton man was killed recently after he was struck by a car on Interstate 80. 22 year old Nathan Lacey was killed September 24th about 2.5 miles West of Wamsutter on Interstate 80 around 8:30pm when he was struck by a car traveling in the passing lane of the freeway. According to Sergeant Stephen Townsend of the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Lacy was standing in the roadway on the inside lane when a couple fromColoradohit him. Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp escapee in custody
(CASPER) Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp inmate Derrick Lee Brock as been apprehended. Brock was placed on escape status on Friday, Sept. 23 after it was determined he was missing while on a work detail at the State Fairgrounds inDouglas. Casper Police announced around 11 p.m. yesterday that Brock had been apprehended inCasper. The Casper Police and Natrona County Sheriff’s Office had developed a probable area from leads and known associates where Brock was hiding or frequenting. Police officers and Sheriff deputies coordinated the apprehension of Brock and he was taken into custody without incident. … Read entire article »

Sec. of State Maxfield to challenge term limits
CHEYENNE,Wyo.(AP) – Wyoming Secretary of State Max Maxfield says he’s planning a legal challenge to the state law that sets term limits for statewide elected officials. Maxfield, who’s now serving his second term asWyomingsecretary of state, plans to announce the lawsuit Thursday at the state Capitol. He says he’s filing the suit as a private citizen. The Wyoming Supreme Court ruled in 2004 that term limits for state legislators were unconstitutional. But the court ruling didn’t overturn term limits for statewide elected officials because none of them joined the case. State law currently allows only two consecutive terms for governor, secretary of state and other statewide elected posts. … Read entire article »
