Robert L. “Larry” Means obituary

Robert L. “Larry” Means, 83, died peacefully Saturday, 9-10-11, at home with his wife Mildred and family by his side.  Larry was a WWII Navy veteran serving in Saipan, enjoyed an illustrious career that spanned managing wildlife refuges:  Cabeza Prieta, Kirwin, National Elk, Havasu, Seedskadee,  before arriving on the national scene to the high ranks of the Dept. of Interior in our nation’s capital.  He was instrumental in designating the boundaries of the Alaska Nat’l Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), as well as developing and implementing the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.  Always the skilled negotiator, teacher, advocate.

Larry and Mildred retired to Lander in 1982, where he   served at the pleasure of the WY Governor as needed, participated on City committees, and an effective and trusted State and Federal Lobbyist for Audubon and Sierra Club.  Also an active member of his community and engaged citizen.

“Pierre” was an extraordinary woodcarver, hot pepper connoissuer, chili maker, curmudgeon, and “Master of all things known and unknown.”

He was preceded in death by parents Pastor Bob and Dorothy Means.  Larry is survived by his wife of 61 years; son Sam Means of Homer, AK; daughters Susan Bybee, Anchorage, AK; Marilyn Stuckey, Goose Creek, S.C.; Nancy Epstein, Minden, NV; sister Martha Capper, Iola, KS; Grandchildren Ben, Ambie, Colin, Owen, Jencie and Sarah; Great Grandchildren Amelia, Henry,and Winston.

Service to be held Thursday, Sept. 15th, 11:00, Mountain View  Baptist Church, 1290 E. Main St.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name directly to: Parks & Rec, 240 Lincoln St., Lander, WY 82520, RE Larry Means, Trees in City Park or Mountain View Baptist Church, 1290 E.
