Larry G. Murray obituary

Larry G. Murray, 70 of Lander, died on Monday, Oct., 24, 2011, at theWyomingMedicalCenterinCasper.

Services are at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lander. Burial will follow atMountHopeCemeteryin Lander.

A visitation is from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton, with a rosary to follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Larry George Murray was born inFortWashakieon Oct. 14, 1941, the son of Charles Edward Murray and Irene Winifred (Harris) Murray.

He was a life-long resident ofFremontCountyand attendedAssumptionAcademyinChadron,Neb., received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Chadron State College inNebraska, and Ed.Specialist degree from theUniversityofWyoming.

Mr. Murray married Sheila Kathleen Baker at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church inChadron,Neb., on Aug. 16, 1960.

He was a rancher and educator on the Wind River Reservation. Mr. Murray had been a principal, teacher, and coach at Lander Valley High School, at the Fort Washakie School, director of Upward Bound for the University of Wyoming, director of extension services for the state of Wyoming, developed the Office of Indian Education, served as an Eastern Shoshone Business Councilman, Economic Development director, as a rancher and oil industry business consultant.

His family said Mr. Murray enjoyed hunting, fishing, rodeoing, raising Quarter Horses, and spending time with his family.

He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lander and member of the Knights of Columbus.

He served on the Wyoming Rural Development Council, Yellowstone Economic Development District, Wind River Visitors Council, Fremont County Association of Governments, Riverton Community Development Association, Fremont County Public Lands Council, and the National Indian Education Association.  He was a past member of the Lander Elks and Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila K. Murray of Lander; sons, Larry R. Murray, William J. Murray, Scott M. Murray, and Shawn L. Murray; a daughter, Bridgette K. Gill; 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild; brothers, Charles Murray and George O’Neal; sisters, Ivora Ray and LaWayne Espinoza.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, a brother, Neal O’Neal, and an infant sister.
