Judge James Barrett, former Wyoming AG, dies at 89

CHEYENNE,Wyo.(AP) – James Barrett, a formerWyomingattorney

general who later served as a federal judge, died Monday in

Cheyenne. He was 89.

     The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/tjhObj) that

Barrett died Monday at theDavisHospiceCenter.

     Barrett served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later

earned his law degree from theUniversityofWyoming.

     Then-Gov. Stan Hathaway appointed Barrett asWyomingattorney

general in 1967. Former President Richard Nixon appointed him to

the 10thU.S.Circuit Court of Appeals in 1971. Barrett served on

another federal court that reviewed foreign espionage cases.

     Gov. Matt Mead issued a statement Tuesday calling Barrett a

friend who set an example as a judge and a citizen.

     Barrett was the son of former Wyoming Gov. and U.S. Sen. Frank

A. Barrett.
