Accident in Fremont County claims one life
(SHOSHONI, Wyo.) A one vehicle crash killing one person occurred early this morning approximately 5 miles east of Shoshoni on Hwy 20/26 mile post 94. Lehi Aoah age 19, was driving a Pontiac Sunfire traveling back from South Dakota returning to Fort Washakie westbound on Hwy 20/26. The driver drove off the right side of the roadway and into the borrow ditch. The driver overcorrected causing the vehicle to overturn. According to Lieutenant Troy D. McLees with the Wyoming Highway Patrol, as the vehicle overturned, three female occupants were ejected from the vehicle. Jovan Willow age 24 was killed during the crash and two younger females ages 3 and 5 were air lifted to Salt Lake City, UT for serious injuries. Art educator recognized by adult education group
(LANDER, Wyo.) Lander art educator Bill Yankee has been recognized by the Wyoming Lifelong Learning Association (WLLA) with the Outstanding Adult Educator Award. Yankee, a longtime Lander Valley High School art teacher, has also been teaching for Central Wyoming College for the past 24 years, said CWC Lander community service coordinator Mickey Douglas who nominated Yankee for the award. “He is an outstanding educator and devotes many hours above and beyond helping prepare students for a better future,” Douglas said. “He is a very dedicated instructor trying to always improve the curriculum and his method of instruction.” The WLLA is a state organization designed to develop, promote and enhance lifelong learning for all of Wyoming and each year it recognizes outstanding adult educators. Riverton’s water being cut by nearly 40 percent
RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) — Riverton’s water supply is being cut by nearly 40 percent because of drought conditions. The Riverton City Council plans an emergency meeting tonight (Thursday evening) to discuss ways to deal with the reduction. (KCWY-TV reports that) officials are considering using water from winter wells but think it may be more practical to ask residents to conserve water. Some ideas include cutting back on lawn watering and fixing leaky toilets. City administrator Steven Weaver says the amount of water coming down the river is a record and lack of water will probably be a concern through the summer. Fremont County Deputy helps deliver baby
(RIVERTON) A call to the Fremont County 911 dispatch center yesterday sent deputies and firefighters racing to an address in the Lost Wells Butte area. A woman called and said she was giving birth to her baby. Fremont County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Rieman and Midvale Fireman David Knoepke raced to the scene and before EMS crews could arrive, delivered the baby early Wednesday morning at 4:20AM in the Lost Wells Butte area. They were assisted by Fremont County Communications Deputy Jennifer Keel, who provided instructional information over the telephone during the delivery. Wild Horse Adoption May 18-19 at Wyoming Honor Farm
(RIVERTON, Wyo.) The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Wyoming Honor Farm will host a wild horse and burro adoption and gentling clinic May 18-19 in Riverton. Tomorrow ( Friday, May 18), the Honor Farm will offer a free clinic to discuss the gentling program, followed by a preview of the horses. Lander school adopts strategic plan
(LANDER, Wyo.) After working since January on the Strategic Plan that will provide direction for Fremont County School #1 from July 2012 through June 2015, the Board of Trustees adopted the document. The five goals in the Plan include: (1) Meet the academic needs of each student, (2) provide a safe, healthy, and orderly school environment and improve student behavior, (3) provide for effective and efficient District operations, (4) improve parent engagement, and (5) improve student engagement. Superintendent of Schools, Mike Bowman, told the Board that plans will be developed to accomplish the goals and that the goals will be provided to employees and discussed with them. Lander water treatment facility gets repairs
(LANDER, Wyo.) The City of Lander is asking all municipal water users to voluntarily conserve water use Tuesday through Thursday each week through June 8, 2012. Yesterday (Wednesday May 16, 2012) the City of Lander began replacing filter media at the water treatment plant. Over the next four weeks, the Water Treatment Plant will replace the media on Tuesday of each week and finish on Thursday of each week. The filter media cleans large particulates in the water. During the process the City will be running on three filters which will lower the overall output of water by 25%, and prevent the City from keeping up with current usage levels. UW guard to speak at 2 Wind River schools
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming men’s basketball student-athlete Luke Martinez will speak at two schools on the Wind River Reservation about how Native Americans can succeed in higher education and athletics. Martinez was invited by the Northern Arapaho Tribal Education Department. He will address the 23 graduating seniors at Wyoming Indian High School’s commencement ceremonies this Sunday and then visit St. Stephens Indian School on Monday. Martinez just completed his junior season with the Cowboys, averaging 11.8 points, 4 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game this past season. Ride of silence in Lander tonight
(LANDER, Wyo.) A ride of silence will take place tonight (Wednesday) in North America and roll across the globe. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride.
