Bomb threat cancels Eastern Shoshone meeting
RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a bomb threat which canceled a meeting to discuss alleged problems at the Eastern Shoshone Housing Authority. About 110 people gathered for Saturday’s General Council meeting at Rocky Mountain Hall in Fort Washakie were evacuated because of the threat. One attendee said (told the Riverton Ranger) that the threat happened shortly after leaders declared there were enough people present to proceed with the meeting. FBI spokesman Dave Joly confirmed the agency is among those investigating the threat. Tribal members signed a petition calling for the meeting because of concerns with the housing authority. Housing authority officials say the petition was circulated because of bitterness over the firing of previous board members. Central Wyo. College offers outdoor classroom
LANDER, Wyo. (AP) — An outdoor education and leadership program offered by Central Wyoming College has become the college’s biggest draw for out-of-state students. Darran Wells is assistant professor of Outdoor Education and Leadership at the college in Riverton. He tells the Casper Star-Tribune that the program has grown from about 30 students five years ago to about 70 today. Wells says almost 80 percent of the students in the program came from outside Wyoming this year. It even occasionally attracts international students. The most popular courses, like backcountry skiing or outdoor rock climbing, have waiting lists. Large brawl breaks out at Riverton’s Family Dollar store
(RIVERTON, Wyo.) Riverton Police are investigating why a large brawl broke out at Family Dollar yesterday (Thursday) evening. According to Captain C.T. Smith with the Riverton Police Department, at approximately 6:42 pm, officers from the Riverton Police Department responded to a report of a fight at the Family Dollar located at 524 Pershing Avenue involving 5-6 people. Officers arrived and found an active fight involving eight people who refused to comply with the orders to stop fighting. Officers requested assistance from the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and Wyoming Highway Patrol to assist breaking up the fight. Riverton Police Officers began to physically break up the fight and as a result Curtis Olman actively resisted and was subdued by the use of a Taser. Dogs attack and kill sheep near Riverton
(RIVERTON, Wyo.) There’s been another dog attack near Riverton. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a report that at least 5 dogs attacked a sheep herd just South of Riverton near Rendezvous road last night (Thursday) killing at least 4 sheep. Dog attacks have been occurring around the outskirts of Riverton on livestock in the past, however this is the first reported incident in several months. Catholic College graduation in Lander
(LANDER, Wyo.) The students and faculty of Wyoming Catholic College will gather to celebrate the College’s most significant annual milestone: Commencement Exercises. Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Mark Randall, said the Commencement event is the culmination of four years of extraordinary formation of its students. Tomorrow (On May 12), twenty-one graduates will cross the stage and be presented with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree – only the second class to do so in the College’s young history. Late Wednesday start proposed for Riverton schools
RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) — A later start to the school day is being proposed on Wednesdays for Riverton public schools during the 2012-13 school year to allow for teacher training. Rather than the usual 8 a.m. start, K-12 classes would start at 8:45 a.m. on Wednesdays only. Officials say the late start will give teachers the opportunity to meet and plan toward the common core standards being adopted in the District 25 schools. They say 36 weeks of Wednesday late starts would replace the three days off for in-service that is the current practice in the Riverton schools. Lander resident focus of America’s Most Wanted
(LANDER, Wyo.) A long time Lander resident, who is on the run from the law, will be the focus of a national television crew today in an effort to help law enforcement agencies apprehend him. America’s Most Wanted producers are in Lander today to gather information on 44 year old Wes Nebecker who was arrested by Lander police in November of 2010 from his residence at the Downtown Motel on 2 counts of providing drugs to a minor. Upon further investigation, Lander detectives attempted to serve Nebecker with 18 felony warrants for sexual abuse of a minor in November of 2011, however Nebecker was nowhere to be found. Central Wyoming breaks ground on health center/Grads do well
RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) — Central Wyoming College is getting ready to start construction on a new health and science center. The school plans a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday at 3:30 p.m. just hours before this year’s nursing school graduates will be pinned. The Riverton Ranger reports construction won’t actually start until Saturday. The project is being paid for by both Fremont County taxpayers and the state. County voters approved an $11.5 million bond initiative and state lawmakers voted to spend $6.5 million on the work. The building was designed by a Denver architectural firm and a Colorado company is the general contractor. However, the school says most of the subcontractors are from Wyoming.
