Art educator recognized by adult education group

(LANDER, Wyo.)   Lander art educator Bill Yankee has been recognized by the Wyoming Lifelong Learning Association (WLLA) with the Outstanding Adult Educator Award. Yankee, a longtime Lander Valley High School art teacher, has also been teaching for Central Wyoming College for the past 24 years, said CWC Lander community service coordinator Mickey Douglas who nominated Yankee for the award. “He is an outstanding educator and devotes many hours above and beyond helping prepare students for a better future,” Douglas said. “He is a very dedicated instructor trying to always improve the curriculum and his method of instruction.” The WLLA is a state organization designed to develop, promote and enhance lifelong learning for all of Wyoming and each year it recognizes outstanding adult educators. Riverton’s water being cut by nearly 40 percent

RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) — Riverton’s water supply is being cut by nearly 40 percent because of drought conditions. The Riverton City Council plans an emergency meeting tonight (Thursday evening) to discuss ways to deal with the reduction. (KCWY-TV reports that) officials are considering using water from winter wells but think it may be more practical to ask residents to conserve water. Some ideas include cutting back on lawn watering and fixing leaky toilets. City administrator Steven Weaver says the amount of water coming down the river is a record and lack of water will probably be a concern through the summer. Fremont County Deputy helps deliver baby

(RIVERTON)  A call to the Fremont County 911 dispatch center yesterday sent deputies and firefighters racing to an address in the Lost Wells Butte area. A woman called and said she was giving birth to her baby. Fremont County Deputy Sheriff Kevin Rieman and Midvale Fireman David Knoepke raced to the scene and before EMS crews could arrive, delivered the baby early Wednesday morning at 4:20AM in the Lost Wells Butte area. They were assisted by Fremont County Communications Deputy Jennifer Keel, who provided instructional information over the telephone during the delivery. Colo., Wyo. grocery workers ratify contract deal

DENVER (AP) — Unionized grocery store workers in Colorado and Wyoming have approved a two-year contract extension. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 7 represents 15,000 workers in the two states. It says the two-year deal, announced Wednesday, will allow its members to keep quality health care benefits through 2015. President Kim Cordova said the grocery stores agreed to pay another $11 million to cover health care. The contract covers workers at King Soopers, Safeway, Albertson’s, Smith Foods and City Market stores. … Read entire article »

Wild Horse Adoption May 18-19 at Wyoming Honor Farm

(RIVERTON, Wyo.)   The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Wyoming Honor Farm will host a wild horse and burro adoption and gentling clinic May 18-19 in Riverton.  (Photos of some of the horses available for adoption can now be seen at www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/programs/Wild_Horses/honorfarm.html.) Tomorrow ( Friday, May 18), the Honor Farm will offer a free clinic to discuss the gentling program, followed by a preview of the horses. The clinic will feature demonstrations focusing on catching a horse, advance and retreat, picking up feet, and beginning to ride. The gentling clinic runs from 1-3 p.m. and is open to the public. Soda ash royalty bill advances to US House

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A bill aimed at keeping American soda ash competitive with a subsidized, synthetic version produced in China is advancing in Washington. The bill, sponsored by Wyoming congresswoman Cynthia Lummis, got the backing of the full House Resources committee on Wednesday. It will be heard by the full House next. The bill would return the soda ash royalty to 2 percent. It rose to 6 percent in October. Soda ash is the trade name for a chemical made from the mineral trona. It’s used in household cleaners, windshields and cellphones. Wyoming produces about 90 percent of U.S. soda ash and the industry employs about 3,000 people in the state. Lummis says soda ash shipments also provide work for hundreds of longshoremen in Portland, Ore. and Port Arthur, Texas. … Read entire article »

National parks to admit service members for free

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park are offering annual entrance passes granting free admission to military service members and their families. The annual passes will become available on Saturday, Armed Forces Day, to active duty service members and their dependents. More than 2,000 national parks, wildlife refuges, national forests, and other public lands across the country also are issuing the passes. Jonathan B. Jarvis is director of the National Park Service. Man caught in Wyo. pleads guilty in Mich. robbery

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — A man arrested in Wyoming after authorities say he robbed a bank in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula while his wife and 2-year-old daughter sat in a getaway car has pleaded guilty in the case. WLUC-TV reports Justin McLean faces up to 25 years in prison when sentenced Sept. 20 following Wednesday’s plea in U.S. District Court on a bank robbery charge. The Northern Michigan Bank branch near Marquette was robbed Oct. 12. McLean was arrested as a fugitive later that month. The Mining Journal of Marquette has reported that McLean’s wife told the FBI that she believed her husband was going into a McDonald’s restaurant next to the bank. … Read entire article »

No problems at anti-abortion protests in Jackson

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — Authorities in Jackson say one citation for careless driving and two citations for destruction of property have been issued during the latest round of abortion demonstrations. Members of Operation Save America demonstrated in the town square Wednesday. Members of a local group, Jackson Hole United, were also out warning people about graphic images being displayed by the anti-abortion group. Teton County spokeswoman Charlotte Reynolds says there have been some complaints about noise, traffic and the groups’ signs. Operation Save America plans to stage demonstrations through Sunday, but they won’t be in the town square on Saturday during the Boy Scouts’ annual Elkfest and antler auction. Last week, members of a Milwaukee-based anti-abortion group also demonstrated in Jackson. The protests follow a recent Wyoming Supreme Court ruling in favor of protesters. … Read entire article »

Lander school adopts strategic plan

(LANDER, Wyo.)   After working since January on the Strategic Plan that will provide direction for Fremont County School #1 from July 2012 through June 2015, the Board of Trustees adopted the document. The five goals in the Plan include:  (1) Meet the academic needs of each student, (2) provide a safe, healthy, and orderly school environment and improve student behavior, (3) provide for effective and efficient District operations, (4) improve parent engagement, and (5) improve student engagement.  Superintendent of Schools, Mike Bowman, told the Board that plans will be developed to accomplish the goals and that the goals will be provided to employees and discussed with them. The administration will report on progress toward goal accomplishment annually.
