Vets’ group gets donations after college debate

POWELL, Wyo. (AP) — Donors upset that a military veterans’ club at a Wyoming college was asked to do community service to obtain student senate funding have given more than $1,000 to the vets’ group. The Northwest Trail newspaper reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/AqF1vt ) that Northwest College students, staff and faculty made the donations to the campus Veteran’s Group after the club requested $400 to fund lunches. The student senate approved the $400 but told the club that senate rules require community service work — angering some faculty, staff and students. Cynthia Garhart, an adviser to the vets’ group, had asked the student senate in December to waive the requirement, noting club members already have served their country. … Read entire article »

Winter feeding starts at National Elk Refuge

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — Supplemental feeding of elk and bison has started on the National Elk Refuge near Jackson. Wildlife officers began by distributing small amounts of alfalfa pellets on Thursday. Eventually the elk will work themselves up to getting 8 pounds of food a day. The bison will get about 20 pounds. There are about 6,000 elk and 600 bison wintering at the southern end of the refuge. The migration of elk there began later this season thanks in part to abundant forage thanks to the heavy spring runoff. Refuge spokeswoman Lori Iverson says the amount of forage has now decreased and more of it is inaccessible because of ice and compacted snow. This year’s feeding season isn’t expected to go as long as last year’s, which lasted 100 days. … Read entire article »

Lovell lineman chooses Wyoming walk-on offer

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Garrett Angell, of Lovell, says the lure of possibly playing one day for the Wyoming Cowboys is too much to ignore even if it means he has to join the team as a walk-on. The 6-foot-6, 330-pound lineman helped lead Lovell to the state Class 2A state championship this past fall. He was a Class 2A West all-conference selection, anchoring the 2A’s top rushing defense and paving the way for Lovell’s second-ranked rushing offense. Angell tells the Casper Star-Tribune ( HYPERLINK “http://bit.ly/yWFuGI” ) that he looked at smaller colleges but decided to accept UW’s preferred walk-on offer. Angell says his plan is to work hard and compete for a position on the offensive line, an area of need for the Cowboys. UW on Wednesday signed five offensive linemen. … Read entire article »
